Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the personality of the main characters of “The Orange Girl”, a novel by Jostein Garder, namely George Roed and Jan Olav. The theory used in this research is Sigmund Freud’s personality theory, this theory states that everyone’s psyche is divided into two, conscious and unconscious. Unconsious itself is divided into two, namely (1) Id and (2) super ego, while conscious only has one part, namely ego. In addition, this study also uses the theory of novel structure theory based on Aristotle’s theory. This theory explains how the structure of a story from several parts, starting from the beginning, crisis, climax, resolution to the ending. Then this study will explain how the the main character and its characterization build the story. In this case, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method, presenting data in the form of descriptive sentences. The data obtained is taken from the main object, namely the novel “The Orange Girl”. Based on the data obtained and the theories used, it is found that the characterization or personality of the main character forms the structure of the story.
