Abstract:
This research with title “AN ANALYSIS OF METAPHOR IN ONE DIRECTION’S SONG LYRICS ON THE MADE IN THE A.M. ALBUM” aims to explore the type, meaning, and the most used metaphor in One Direction’s album Made In The A.M. song lyrics. Utilizing Lakoff and Johnson's Metaphor Theory as an analytical framework, this study investigates the use of complex metaphors in lyrics, providing a detailed examination of how these linguistic devices enhance the expressive qualities of the songs. The researcher used qualitative descriptive methods to conduct the analysis, ensuring a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the metaphorical content. This research data was collected from 17 songs in Made in The A.M. album. Through this analysis, the research identified a total of 21 metaphors, categorized into three types: 8 structural metaphors, 6 orientational metaphors, and 7 physical metaphors. Each type of metaphor was analyzed to understand its specific function and contribution to the overall meaning and emotional impact of the song lyrics. The findings reveal that structural metaphors are the most frequently used type in the album, with 8 instances identified. This predominance underscores the band's reliance on structural metaphors that describing and explaining an object (complex concept) with other objects (concrete term). Orientational metaphors and physical metaphors also play significant roles, contributing to the richness and depth of the lyrical content. This research concludes that the use of metaphors in One Direction's Made In The A.M. album is a deliberate artistic choice that enhances the lyrical narrative, providing listeners with a more profound emotional and cognitive experience. This research not only contributes to the field of linguistics by illustrating the practical application of Metaphor Theory in contemporary music but also offers insights into the creative processes underlying popular songwriting.
