ENGLISH SYNTACTIC STRUCTURE OF JOKO WIDODO AND SUSILO BAMBANG YUDHOYONO: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ENGLISH PROFICIENCY OF JOKOWI AND SBY

Abstract

This research mainly explores the difference of English proficiencies of SBY and Jokowi. In this research, the researcher uses English Syntax and Sentence Type analysis to explore the difference of English proficiencies of SBY and Jokowi. The researcher also uses qualitative study and descriptive method to analyze the obtained data. The research results in a classification that classifies SBY as an advanced English user and Jokowi as an intermediate English user. The classification made by the researcher comes from the analysis conducted related to the types of sentences that they used in delivering his speech. SBY constructed 13 minor clauses, 24 simple sentences, 1 compound sentence, 30 complex sentences, and 9 complex-compound sentences. Meanwhile, Jokowi constructed 6 minor clauses, 21 simple sentences, 6 compound sentences, 29 complex sentences, and 4 complex-compound sentences. The distribution and numbers of sentences do not become the parameter used by the researcher to classify that SBY is an advanced user and Jokowi is an intermediate user, but the researcher compared the types of sentences in speeches of SBY and Jokowi one another to achieve this conclusion. The comparison shows that SBY construct sentences in more complicated ways than Jokowi does. The sentence construction of SBY is complicated enough to make him classified as an advanced English user.
